Despite their recent wins, the Miami Marlins continue to grapple with offensive issues, particularly evident with their catchers, Nick Fortes and Christian Bethancourt. Bethancourt joined the Marlins during the offseason from the Tampa Bay Rays following Jacob Stallings’ departure for the Colorado Rockies. There were high hopes for Bethancourt’s success in Miami. Meanwhile, Fortes, a Marlins draftee, has been in the majors since 2021. This season, playing time has been fairly evenly split between the two catchers. Unfortunately, neither has managed to ignite their bats. Bethancourt has recorded 7 hits in 53 at-bats over 24 games, enduring a challenging start to the season with an initial 0-for-33 streak. Fortes hasn’t fared much better, with 10 hits in 79 at-bats. Both players’ lackluster performances have added to the Marlins’ offensive struggles. It’s hoped that the Marlins will explore replacement options as the deadline approaches to bolster offensive production from the catcher position.
