In his first year as head coach of the New England Patriots, Jerod Mayo is opting for a familiar face to kick off his tenure. With the Patriots gearing up to select a quarterback in this season’s draft, Mayo sees the value in having a seasoned presence to aid the team in the interim while the future starter gains valuable experience.

According to a tweet from The Sports Fellow, Mayo is prepared to rely on veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett to help bridge the transition between their current situation and the future direction of the team.

Brissett serves as an insurance policy, with Mayo acknowledging the likelihood that the future Patriots quarterback selected in the 2024 NFL Draft may not be immediately prepared to start in Week 1.

Mayo intends to utilize Brissett as a seasoned mentor to the rookie, both on the field and in the locker room. Additionally, New England’s offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt, shares a connection with Brissett, further solidifying his role as a guiding force for both the Patriots’ offense and its forthcoming quarterback.

Mayo is confident that Brissett will fully embrace this mentoring role, believing he will excel as a teacher for the quarterback soon to be drafted. With the Patriots holding the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft, the anticipation is high for New England to select a quarterback from a talent-rich class.

New England concluded the previous season at the bottom of the AFC East standings with a 4-13 record, prompting the organization to part ways with their legendary coach, Bill Belichick.

Following the season, former 2021 first-round draft pick quarterback Mac Jones was traded, leaving a void that the Patriots are now seeking to fill through the draft.
