The NFL found itself thrust into mainstream news and political discussions following controversial remarks made by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker during a commencement speech at Benedictine College on May 11. In response, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has voiced his disagreement with Butker’s message, emphasizing that women are not receiving adequate respect.
Butker’s speech addressed contentious social issues such as IVF, abortion rights, LGBTQ matters, and other topics prevalent in today’s political landscape. As a devout Catholic, Butker also lauded his wife’s role as a homemaker, which some found insensitive given the context of the audience—college graduates who had invested significant time and money into earning their degrees and likely aimed to pursue careers. Here’s an excerpt of his controversial comments.
“I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you. Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world… embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”
Jalen Hurts seemed to address those comments during the Philadelphia Eagles’ Women’s Football Festival over the weekend, as reported by People Magazine.
“Women are thrust into positions where they have to overcome this, overcome that, and they lack the respect that they deserve,” stated Hurts, 25, during his team’s Women’s Football Festival on Sunday, May 19. As the crowd cheered, he continued, “I’m here advocating for it, not only in football but in every situation. We all know the woman is the rock of everything.”
Given the timing, it’s difficult to imagine that Jalen Hurts’ comments weren’t in direct response to Harrison Butker’s speech. Hurts, who earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection last year, had an impressive season with 3,858 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Additionally, he showcased his dual-threat ability with 605 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground.
