Southampton have already been active in the transfer market this summer after defeating Leeds United in the Championship play-off final, and now they are eyeing a fan favorite from Elland Road.
The Saints added to the play-off heartbreak of Leeds fans, who have already endured more than their fair share, when Adam Armstrong scored the only goal within the first 30 minutes of their recent clash. As a result, Leeds will remain in the Championship for another season, while Russell Martin steps into the Premier League for the first time as a manager.
Martin has already secured two signings following the promotion. Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ loan deal was made permanent for around £20 million, and over the weekend, the Saints brought back 36-year-old veteran Adam Lallana on a free transfer.
Now, Southampton could deliver another blow to Leeds by targeting an Elland Road favorite who played the entire 90 minutes against them in the play-off final.

Southampton are reportedly targeting Leeds United defender Joe Rodon, whose future remains uncertain. Leeds, preparing for a busy transfer window to replace several key players such as Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto, may also see departures due to high interest from other clubs.
Rodon, a 26-year-old defender on loan from Tottenham, made a significant impact with 50 appearances for Leeds. Had Leeds secured promotion, Rodon’s move to the club would have become permanent. Now, with Leeds remaining in the Championship, Southampton could capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Without promotion, Joe Rodon’s future at Leeds is uncertain. The club is keen to sign the £11 million defender permanently, but the absence of Premier League football makes it challenging to both attract Rodon and afford the transfer fee. Ipswich Town has already shown interest in the Welsh international, and now, according to TeamTalk, Southampton is also considering a move for the former Swansea and Rennes center-back ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur has activated a contract extension clause for Joe Rodon, extending his deal until 2026. This strategic move allows Tottenham to demand a full transfer fee for Rodon, rather than settling for a reduced price this summer, complicating Leeds’ plans to sign him.
Although initially, it seemed that Rodon’s contract would expire in 12 months, which could have facilitated Leeds’ efforts, the extension shifts the advantage back to Tottenham. The Spurs can now loan him out, potentially with an obligation to buy, similar to Southampton’s deal for Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
This situation leaves Leeds with a glimmer of hope, but Premier League clubs like Southampton might have an edge in securing Rodon’s services due to their top-flight status, which could take precedence in his decision-making.
