Brisbane Lions’ young prospect Kalin Lane, originally from the Great Southern, has been informed that his contract will not be renewed for next season.
Lane, who was picked by the Lions at No. 14 in the 2021 AFL mid-season rookie draft, showed promise, playing 52 games for the Lions’ VFL team. In 2022, he secured a contract extension, keeping him at the Gabba through this season.
Unfortunately, the 22-year-old’s hopes for the 2024 season and a long-awaited AFL debut were dashed after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in a match against Coburg in July.
Despite the tough end to his career, Lane was able to celebrate with the team as the Lions triumphed over Sydney in the 2024 AFL grand final.
The 205cm ruckman Kalin Lane joins Carter Michael and James Madden as the only other delisted players from Brisbane’s 2024 premiership team.
Lions general manager of football Danny Daly expressed gratitude to the departing trio, acknowledging the impact injuries had on their time at the club.
“Kalin (Lane) and Carter (Michael) both struggled with injury during their time here,” Daly said. “I thank all three players for their contributions to the Brisbane Lions and wish them and their families all the best for the future.”
Before joining the Lions, Lane played 18 matches for Claremont in the WAFL, including one league game in 2021, prior to being drafted by Brisbane.
