Check out Andrew Mackie’s comments after the 2024 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period ended.

Mackie on the Smith Trade

Ultimately, the Bulldogs had a lot happening, especially with the four-way trade and various moving elements.

When you’re in that situation—similar to what we did with Esava last year—it’s wise to take your time and apply some pressure to see what other clubs might offer.

I completely understand their position; we anticipated it might unfold this way, but we’ve maintained a respectful dialogue with the Bulldogs.

We were always confident that a resolution would come, and our aim was to ensure the Bulldogs received proper compensation for Bailey.

This is beneficial for them, and it’s equally exciting for us to be able to bring Bailey on board, and we’re looking forward to it.

Mackie on How the Negotiation Played Out

For us, it was always going to revolve around pick 17.

Like every club, we are very protective of our picks because we want to give our recruiters the best opportunity to bring in both new talent and traded players like Bailey, whether this year or in the future.

This is why negotiations often take time; clubs need to advocate for themselves and do what they believe is necessary.

Right now, I can say that we are really excited as a football club to have 23-year-old Bailey Smith joining us, and we look forward to seeing what he can contribute.

Mackie on Smith’s Injury Recovery

Currently, my understanding is that he is doing very well.

He’s in a great place both physically and mentally, and he’s genuinely excited about the chance to come down and play for us. This enthusiasm is shared by us, and we’re looking forward to it.

We will ensure he has all the support he needs, especially regarding his physical recovery, as we help him meet the necessary milestones moving forward.

This will be our focus as we work with our team, but as far as I know, he is progressing well.
