The Miami Dolphins boast one of the NFL’s top offensive attacks, and although they need improvements on defense, they are now a legitimate playoff contender. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa spearheads this powerful offense. Despite facing his share of critics, he posted impressive numbers last season and earned his first Pro Bowl selection.

He’s going into the final season of his current contract, which means he’s due for an extension, and per Adam Schefter, the Dolphins do want to pay him, but they’re not sure what his fair market value is.

The market for star quarterbacks has risen like a hot air balloon over the last couple of years, especially with Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars, whom most would agree isn’t as good a player as Tagovailoa, recently getting a five-year, $275 million extension.

Tagovailoa threw for 29 touchdowns and an NFL-high 4,624 yards, completing 69.3 percent of his pass attempts last season. His performance was a major factor in Miami finishing second in points and first in passing yards and total yards.

His achievements have boosted wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was already an elite player when traded to Miami two years ago, to an even higher level of production.

Meanwhile, many of the Dolphins’ offseason signings have focused on strengthening the defense, including veteran safety Jordan Poyer and linebacker Shaquil Barrett, both of whom have at least one Pro Bowl appearance to their names.
