Ash Handley may be sidelined due to a rib injury, but he has full confidence in his teammates to turn Leeds Rhinos’ season around, starting with their upcoming match against Huddersfield on Friday.
Handley sustained the injury during the team’s 34-8 home defeat against Warrington, marking their third loss in seven Super League matches this season and leaving them in eighth place.
In addition to Handley, prop Tom Holroyd also suffered an injury in the first half and underwent hospital checks. Handley, who has scored seven tries in eight games this year, is eager to return to action once he has recovered.
Reflecting on the recent defeat against Warrington, Ash Handley acknowledged that his and Tom Holroyd’s early departures due to injury didn’t help the team’s cause. However, Handley expressed disappointment with the overall performance, as they believed they were capable of securing a victory.
Despite the setback, Handley emphasized that the team is determined to bounce back and rectify their mistakes. Having observed Huddersfield’s impressive performance against Hull, Handley acknowledged their capabilities but also stressed the unpredictability of the Super League.
He remains confident that by playing to their strengths and executing their game plan effectively, the Rhinos can string together positive results and embark on a winning streak.
Ash Handley disclosed that he initially suffered a knock during the round-six win against Castleford, and the injury was exacerbated by a heavy collision during the game against Warrington.
He described feeling a “pop” and experiencing difficulty breathing properly after the hit, leading to his substitution. Although he managed to walk off the field, Handley sought medical attention at the hospital, where it was determined that he had cartilage damage rather than a fracture.
Fortunately, Handley’s condition improved in the following days, and he is optimistic about his recovery. Given his typically fast healing process, he hopes to resume running soon and progress from there.
Second rower James Bentley, who sustained a head injury during the match against Castleford, is uncertain for the upcoming clash against Huddersfield.
However, there is optimism that winger David Fusitu’a, who underwent knee surgery, could potentially make his season debut for Leeds.
French prop Justin Sangaré will be back in contention after serving a suspension.
