Steve Sarkisian has just confirmed Texas new starting quarterback for 2024.
The redshirt junior guided the Longhorns to their first College Football Playoff appearance in 2023.
The Texas Longhorns will enter the SEC and their bid for a second consecutive appearance in the College Football Playoff with a familiar starting quarterback.
Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed Wednesday that Quinn Ewers will remain the team’s starter in 2024.
“Quinn’s our starter,” the Longhorns’ head coach quips.
The news is unsurprising, given that Ewers set career highs in touchdowns, yards, and completion percentage while leading the Longhorns to their first College Football Playoff appearance in 2023. The news does, however, imply that sophomore quarterback and former national No. 1 recruit Arch Manning will return as the team’s backup, barring an injury.
Ewers enters the 2024 season as one of college football’s top quarterbacks, leading a Longhorns team that is expected to be among the nation’s best once again. Ewers’ expectations have been reflected in early Heisman Trophy odds, with one sportsbook ranking him as the co-favorite to win the sport’s top individual award.
Ewers opted to return to the Longhorns rather than enter the 2024 NFL Draft. His return, combined with a number of high-profile additions via the transfer portal and a recruiting class that has consistently ranked among the best in the country, has resulted in serious national championship aspirations for the Longhorns heading into the upcoming season.
The Longhorns’ path to a national championship, however, will be difficult, as they will face defending national champion Michigan on the road, former two-time national champion and current odds-on favorite Georgia at DKR, and the traditional Red River Rivalry with Oklahoma in Dallas.
On April 20, Ewers and the Longhorns will play their first game, the Orange-White Spring Game.
