Although the three-point contest appeared to be a perfect opportunity for Caitlin Clark to shine during WNBA All-Star Weekend, the Indiana Fever rookie chose not to take part. On Friday, she explained her decision, stating that she wanted to focus on resting due to the heavy basketball schedule she’s had recently. She also mentioned that there are already many talented shooters in the contest and that she will have future chances to join in.
Clark explained, “I just need some rest. I’ve been playing basketball non-stop for a year. It’s not easy to just show up and shoot from a rack, especially since it’s something I haven’t done much or had time to practice. My focus has been on helping my team win.
“I’m sure there will be plenty of chances for me to participate in the future. The shooters in this competition are all excellent, shooting close to 40 percent. I’m excited to see them and will be there to support them. For me, the most important thing is taking a break and enjoying some personal time.”
Unlike her more experienced counterparts, Clark transitioned directly from Iowa to the WNBA without an offseason after being drafted. She clearly values the rest and expressed similar sentiments when she was excluded from the US Olympic team.
Even with Clark’s absence, Friday’s three-point contest will include Stefanie Dolson, who tops the WNBA in three-point percentage, and Kayla McBride, who leads the league in total made threes.
