Castleford Tigers seem to be hitting their stride as the Super League season approaches its midpoint, with their recent victory over Hull FC marking their third win of the campaign. This win has widened the gap to the league’s bottom two sides by five points.

Tigers supporters may be reflecting on what might have been, especially considering the potential acquisition of Kaylan Iro from the Cronulla Sharks for the 2024 season. The heavily rumored move of Iro, son of former rugby league star Kevin Iro, to Castleford Tigers had generated excitement among fans.

The anticipated move of Kaylan Iro to Castleford Tigers did not materialize, as he opted to remain with the Cronulla Sharks in an attempt to secure a place in their first-team squad. This decision has proven fruitful for Iro, as he now plays a pivotal role in the Sharks’ table-topping squad.

However, with Iro’s contract due to expire at the end of the 2024 season, speculation about his future has reignited. Speaking from Australia, Iro has provided a significant update on his future plans.

Talking to Zero Tackle in Australia, Iro has recently given an update on his future. Although he would like to remain with the Sharks, he hasn’t finalized a new contract yet. His plans for the long term are still uncertain.

“I always have that thought in mind, but simultaneously, I’m committed to staying at this club, and naturally, I want to be part of it,” Iro remarked.

“I’m someone who’s driven by determination, so when I set my sights on something, I strive to give it my all to achieve it. Right now, I’m just grateful to be part of this team,” Iro expressed.

Regarding his priority to remain at Cronulla, he clarified, “That’s definitely my aim, but in footy, things can unfold unexpectedly, and you’re never certain when opportunities arise or what unfolds,” Iro elaborated.

Should Iro become available for other clubs, there’s bound to be significant interest from Super League teams.

Cronulla Sharks currently lead the NRL ladder, having secured nine victories in their first 11 games. Iro initially started as a replacement in the first three matches but earned a spot in the starting 13 during the Sharks’ round four triumph against the Canberra Raiders. Since then, he has featured in every game, playing the full duration and contributing to an impressive seven-game winning streak.

Throughout the season, Iro has showcased his abilities, scoring one try in the victory over the Raiders. Additionally, he has provided two try assists, made three line breaks, and evaded tackles on 31 occasions. Notably, he maintains an average of 161 running metres per game.

As a Cook Islands international, Iro is contracted to the Sharks until the conclusion of the 2024 season. This year marks his breakthrough with the club, following his commendable performances in the NSW Cup, where he represented the Newtown Jets and played a significant role in their ascent to the top of the table before earning his place in the Sharks’ first-team squad.
