Head coach Matt Peet says the Wigan Warriors are still preparing for the best from rivals St Helens in Friday’s derby clash, despite St Helens’ consecutive defeats in the Super League competition.
Paul Wellens’ team was recently surprised by Castleford Tigers, suffering a shocking 8-6 home defeat. Meanwhile, the reigning champions, the Wigan Warriors, extended their winning streak to nine across all competitions after their latest Battle of the Borough victory.
Wigan’s victory over Leigh solidified their position at the top of the Super League table. Meanwhile, St Helens are now four points behind, having also lost to Salford in Round 15.
The Brick Community Stadium will host a derby double-header on Friday with Wigan’s and Saints’ men’s and women’s sides both in action
Both teams will be missing several key players due to injuries. Additionally, Wigan will be without star hooker Brad O’Neill due to suspension, while St Helens’ influential utility Moses Mbye will also be sidelined, despite the club’s appeal against the match review panel’s decision earlier in the week.
Wigan head coach Peet commented, “I think Saints have a lot of experience in winning not only these games, but big games in general. They know their strengths and will be aiming to return to top form.”
“The reality is, they remain one of the strongest defensive teams, and they understand what it takes to return to winning ways.
“I don’t think they’ll be overly concerned about their opposition this week; they have a remarkable organization with an exceptional group of players.
“They know the foundations of their performances and what it takes to win these matches.”
St Helens currently lead 1-0 in 2024, securing victory on Good Friday at a packed Totally Wicked Stadium against a 12-man Warriors team.
These two Super League powerhouses will meet again in August at Elland Road’s Magic Weekend.
“I think we all recognize it as the standout fixture of the league year, certainly for us,” Peet added.
“There’s a lot of respect for Paul Wellens and their organization, and these games are consistently among the most exciting of the season.
“As a coach, this isn’t a week where you need to say much; we’re eagerly anticipating the match and watching two proud teams compete in front of a fantastic atmosphere.”
