43-Year-Old Candidate Scheduled for Head Coach Interview at League Two’s Cheltenham Town

Former Newport County AFC, Walsall, and Swindon Town manager Michael Flynn emerges as a top candidate for the head coach position at Cheltenham Town, according to information obtained by Gloucestershire Live.

Lee Johnson, son of the new Robins director of football Gary Johnson, is reportedly not being considered for the role.

Interviews are slated to commence early next week, with 43-year-old Flynn among the candidates scheduled to meet with Johnson and other members of the club’s board.

The Pro Licence-certified coach boasts over 350 matches of touchline experience. He notably steered Newport County through memorable FA Cup campaigns, securing victories over Leicester City, a draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, and a fifth-round encounter with Manchester City.

Flynn, along with his assistant Wayne Hatswell, departed their most recent role at Swindon Town in mid-January.

Cheltenham Town is seeking their third manager since Michael Duff departed to join Barnsley in June 2022. Wade Elliott assumed the managerial role following Duff’s departure, having previously served as the first-team coach at Whaddon Road.

Following a 16th-placed finish in the 2022/23 season, Wade Elliott managed to secure Cheltenham Town’s position in the league. However, after a disappointing start to the following campaign, Elliott was dismissed from his role in September 2023.

Darrell Clarke took over from Wade Elliott but left for Barnsley on Thursday, leaving Cheltenham Town to prepare for a return to League Two following three seasons in League One.
