The Hokies land one of the state’s best players.
The Virginia Tech Hokies started the holiday week on a high note by securing a significant commitment from four-star wide receiver Matthew Outten. Outten chose Virginia Tech over other finalists Penn State, Syracuse, and Maryland.
This commitment from Matthew Outten is a major recruiting victory for head coach Brent Pry and wide receivers coach Fontel Mines. Outten was a top priority for Virginia Tech, and beating out Penn State, who also pursued him eagerly, underscores the significance of this recruitment win.
Outten’s commitment draws parallels to Keylen “Brodie” Adams’ recruitment last summer. Adams, another highly regarded receiver and one of the top players in Virginia, chose Virginia Tech over powerhouse programs like Alabama and Ohio State.
Standing at 6-foot-0 and weighing 200 pounds, Outten plays for I.C. Norcom in Portsmouth. He is ranked as the No. 6 overall player in Virginia and the 139th-ranked player nationally for the class of 2025, according to 247Sports.
Watching Outten’s highlights, it’s clear he has the potential to make an immediate impact for the Hokies. He possesses impressive size and speed, and his ability to make plays with the ball in his hands stands out. In addition to his skills as a wide receiver, Outten is versatile, contributing on defense and as a kick returner. His athleticism extends to track and field, where he excels at Norcom.
The Virginia Tech Hokies are building a formidable wide receiver corps for the future, with Matthew Outten marking a significant addition. Outten joins Jayden Anderson as the second committed receiver for the 2025 class, following last year’s recruitment of Keylen “Brodie” Adams and Chanz Wiggins. With top receivers like Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, Jaylin Lane, and Stephen Gosnell set to depart after the upcoming season, opportunities for playing time will abound in 2025.
It’s another successful day for the Hokies, and they warmly welcome Matthew Outten into the fold.
