Steelers’ Cameron Hayward has declared his absence from the Pittsburgh OTAs for the first time. Hayward, a six-time Pro-Bowl defensive lineman, is approaching the final year of his existing contract. The OTAs, starting Tuesday and spanning until June 6 with 10 sessions in total, will proceed without him.

“First of all, it’s voluntary, let’s get that straight,” Heyward emphasized regarding OTAs. “I’m working out, I’m doing everything but [attending OTAs].” Pittsburgh’s mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 11-13.

“I’ve consistently attended these OTAs, but right now, it’s about contract negotiations,” Heyward expressed on his Not Just Football podcast. “You know, I aspire to remain a Pittsburgh Steeler, but the future is uncertain.” As the current Walter Payton Man of the Year, his absence will only be notable if he misses the mandatory camp.

At 35 and recently recovering from a significant ground injury that sidelined him for six games last season, he’s keen to secure one last substantial contract. “You have to prioritize what’s best for you,” he stated. “I’m putting in the work, both on and off the field. There’s nothing I’m not doing. I’m giving my all. We’ll reach that point when the time comes.”

The undeniable leader in the locker room undoubtedly aims to remain in Pittsburgh for the entirety of his career, yet fans can only observe as salary negotiations commence.
