IOWA CITY — The Iowa football program landed a commitment from quarterback transfer Mark Gronowski.
Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports broke the news on Tuesday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel later corroborated the story. Gronowski later shared his commitment in a post to X, formerly known as Twitter, which featured a graphic of the former National Champion in a Hawkeye uniform.
Gronowski spent five seasons at South Dakota State and piloted the Jackrabbits to a pair of FCS National Championships (2022, 2023).
The Naperville, Illinois, product received the 2023 Walter Payton Award, which recognizes the most outstanding offensive player in the FCS annually.
Gronowski appeared in 55 games during his career with SDSU and completed 64% of his passes for 10,308 yards and 93 touchdowns with 20 interceptions.
He also racked up 1,787 rushing yards and an additional 37 touchdowns on the ground.
In 2024, he completed 61% of his passes for 2,719 yards and 23 touchdowns plus 380 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.
Following the Jackrabbits’ season-ending loss to North Dakota State last month, former SDSU head coach Jimmy Rogers, who took over as the head coach at Washington State following the 2024 season, spoke highly of Gronowski’s time in Brookings.

“He has been unbelievable,” Rogers said. “He has been an unbelievable player here. He has been an unbelievable person here. … He has impacted a community, this football program, my family. We are going to miss him.”
In a 2021 matchup against Iowa, Gronowski threw for 87 yards in a 7-3 Hawkeye victory.
He finished his SDSU career with an all-time record of 49-6, two Missouri Valley Football Conference First Team honors (2020-21, 2023) and a First Team FCS All-American recognition in 2023.
Grownoski sat out the 2021 fall season after suffering knee injury during National Championship of the 2020 season, which was played in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The former 3-star prospect joins quarterback Hank Brown (Auburn) and defensive linemen Jonah Pace (Central Michigan) and Bryce Hawthorne (South Dakota State) in Iowa’s 2025 transfer portal class.
