Southampton will return to the Premier League next season after a brief stint in the Championship. Their journey was swift and successful, culminating in a fourth-place finish and a playoff triumph over Leeds United with a 1-0 victory in the Wembley final. Adam Armstrong’s goal secured their Premier League spot, with Southampton showcasing resolute defending throughout the match. Kyle Walker-Peters played a pivotal role in the victory, effectively neutralizing Leeds’ top player, Crysencio Summerville, and earning praise for his performance at right-back.
The celebrations extended late into the night on Sunday, and Southampton promptly arranged a trophy parade at St Mary’s on Monday. This allowed fans the chance to join in the festivities and celebrate alongside the players.

Kyle Walker-Peters delivers a Premier League message to Southampton fans. Having been with the club for four-and-a-half years, initially joining on loan in January 2020 before securing a permanent move that summer, the 27-year-old has emerged as one of Southampton’s standout performers. His consistent excellence was evident throughout their Championship campaign this season.
As the sole representative of Southampton in the EFL Championship Team of the Season, Walker-Peters seemed destined to leave the club in the summer to advance his career if promotion wasn’t achieved. However, with Southampton’s successful playoff victory, the twice-capped England player has shared a picture from the St Mary’s celebrations on his Instagram account. Accompanying the image is the caption: “Back where we belong!”, which could be interpreted as a subtle hint regarding his future plans.
The use of ‘we’ in the post might indeed suggest a subtle hint regarding the player’s future, as he is likely to attract interest despite the team’s promotion. However, it’s clear that Walker-Peters has thoroughly enjoyed the responsibility and freedom granted to him by manager Russell Martin this season. He has displayed a determined attitude in his efforts to propel Southampton back to the top flight, appearing fully committed to the cause.

After an uninterrupted run of 11 seasons in the top flight, Southampton faced relegation in the 2022/23 season. Their immediate return to the Premier League is undoubtedly a relief. The next challenge is to navigate what promises to be a challenging first season back, but having Walker-Peters on their side significantly enhances their chances of survival.
Mohammed Salisu, among the 19 players who departed the club following relegation, responded to Walker-Peters’ post with an emoji indicating “Top” along with a heart. Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who was on loan at Southampton during the relegation campaign, commented “Big stuff,” while rapper AJ Tracey expressed, “Only right!” Bournemouth striker Dom Solanke chimed in with, “Don’t ask twice!”
Notably, the comments section was flooded with messages from Southampton fans, all conveying a clear plea for Walker-Peters to stay.
With their promotion, Southampton has provided themselves with an opportunity to persuade Walker-Peters to extend his stay on the south coast.
