Leeds United’s technical director, Gretar Steinsson, has gone to Germany to work on finalizing a transfer for Austrian international midfielder Dejan Ljubicic.
Leeds United have had a challenging summer, struggling to secure promotion back to the Premier League and facing the possibility of having to offload several key players. Teenager Archie Gray has already moved to Tottenham in a £40m deal, and there are strong rumors linking Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto with Premier League transfers.
With midfield options thinning—following Glen Kamara’s transfer to French side Rennes—Leeds are looking to bolster their squad. They are pursuing FC Koln midfielder Dejan Ljubicic, having previously had a £3.37m bid turned down. To push the deal through, Leeds have sent technical director Gretar Steinsson to Germany to negotiate an improved offer and finalize the transfer.
Ljubicic could be set for a summer move to Leeds.
The Austrian midfielder has just 12 months remaining on his contract with the German second division club, making a potential deal between the two teams seem feasible.
At 26 years old, he joined the German side in 2021 from Austrian club Wien and has netted eight goals in 83 appearances. Known for his versatility, he can play both on the right side of midfield and as a defensive midfielder, which could be attractive to Leeds’ manager, Daniel Farke.
Leeds currently have Ethan Ampadu among their midfield ranks and Ljubicic could be a good partner for the more defensive minded Welshman.
The Whites will need to add more quality as they look to get out of the Championship at the second time of asking, and they are likely to have a sizeable budget to reinforce their squad given the players they will likely have to sell.
