Leeds Rhinos are reportedly considering a potential move to re-sign one of their former stars for the 2025 season. There are indications that they are interested in acquiring Kallum Watkins, the captain of Salford Red Devils.
According to The Mirror, Leeds Rhinos are considering pursuing Kallum Watkins as part of their strategy to assemble a squad capable of contending for the Super League title in 2025.
Watkins, who has experienced a career revival in recent years, has excelled at Salford, particularly since transitioning to the second row. He scored twice against Leeds in Salford’s recent victory over his former team, drawing attention to his impressive form.
The report indicates that Leeds is contemplating whether to make a move to bring Watkins back to AMT Headingley, potentially alongside another modern-era legend, following their recent deal to sign Ryan Hall for 2025.
However, any transfer for Watkins would likely involve a fee, as he still has a year remaining on his contract with Salford and is in exceptional form. There are no indications that Salford would be willing to let him go.
Recent years have seen frequent transactions between the two clubs. Last winter, the Red Devils sold standout half-back Brodie Croft and hooker Andy Ackers to Leeds Rhinos for a substantial fee. Additionally, Ian Blease moved across the Pennines to oversee Leeds’ rugby operations.
However, bringing in Watkins would be their most significant and intriguing acquisition to date. At 33, Watkins has been in outstanding form throughout the season and has been crucial to Salford’s strong performance in the 2024 campaign.
And now, according to reports, Leeds are considering a move to re-sign a player who won every domestic honour during a glittering first spell with the Rhinos.
Watkins, if a deal could be completed, would likely then be a direct replacement for Rhyse Martin, who is leaving the club to join Hull KR in 2025.
