New Mexico (4-1) remains unbeaten at home this season, most recently defeating Grambling State 80-58 on Thursday. Donovan Dent shined with 22 points and eight assists, maintaining his streak as the only Division I player to post at least 12 points and six assists in every game this season. Tru Washington contributed 15 points and tied his career high with five steals.
Texas Southern (1-4) is aiming to break a three-game skid following losses to Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Samford. The Tigers, picked second in the preseason SWAC poll behind Grambling State, are led by Kenny Hunter, the conference’s preseason defensive player of the year.
Sunday marks the ninth all-time meeting between the programs, with New Mexico holding a 7-1 series advantage. The Lobos have won the last four encounters, including a dominant 92-55 victory in last year’s season opener. Texas Southern’s lone win in The Pit came during the 1994 Lobo Classic and remains UNM’s only loss to a SWAC opponent (29-1).
Next week, the Lobos will travel to Palm Springs for the Acrisure Classic. They will face Arizona State on Thanksgiving night (8:30 p.m. PT on TruTV) and take on either USC or Saint Mary’s on Friday in the championship or consolation game.
