Mal Meninga has stated that the Kangaroos were unaware of Cameron Murray’s existing injury before the match against New Zealand, as the South Sydney player now faces up to five months out of action.
Murray was pulled from the upcoming Pacific Championship final by team doctors after sustaining a wrist injury.
It’s still uncertain whether Murray had the injury before the Kangaroos’ win over New Zealand. Following Monday’s training, the medical team sent him for precautionary scans to assess his condition.
The 26-year-old Cameron Murray has been diagnosed with a scapholunate injury, known for its lengthy recovery time. He is scheduled to undergo surgery within the next week.
Murray was instrumental in Australia’s 22-10 win over New Zealand, playing the full 80 minutes with strapping on his left wrist.
Although Mal Meninga had the option to rest Murray in favor of Hudson Young, he chose not to as Murray was determined to play.
“I knew Cam had hurt it during training, but we weren’t aware of the severity because he kept it to himself,” Meninga explained.
“He never complained and just carried on. He didn’t want anyone to know.
“We were aware he was sore, but he was fine to play. It’s as simple as that.
“He still played exceptionally well, and it didn’t seem to hinder him. It’s just unfortunate this happened.
“Regardless of its seriousness before the game, I believe he likely aggravated it during play.
“Player welfare is always our top priority, but he felt ready to play and made that choice.”
Murray’s battle with injury restricted him to just 14 games in the 2024 NRL season but did not limit his chances for international selection.
His effort in the green and gold jersey was one Meninga believes epitomises the character of the team.
“We’re calling out for players to make themselves available for the international game, and he epitomises that.
“I know he loves playing the game and playing in the Australian colours. From my perspective, that’s the exact kind of person you want putting on the Australian jersey.”
Australia will face Tonga on November 10 in the Pacific Championships final.
