Ethan Ampadu has been given the captain’s armband, and despite having joined Leeds United only a year ago, Daniel Farke deemed him the clear choice for the role.
This appointment highlights Ampadu’s significance and the quality he has displayed over the past year, having started 54 of 55 matches across all competitions. He was only rested for one game, an FA Cup fixture against Plymouth.
At just 23, his presence, leadership on the field, and experience are impressive. On Saturday, Ampadu once again stood out as one of Leeds’ top performers, even as he transitioned back to midfield after recent appearances in defense.
Ampadu is quickly shaping up to be one of the standout signings of Farke’s tenure, especially given Leeds’ £7 million investment to bring him in from Chelsea in 2023. If Leeds are to achieve their goals this season, Ampadu will be a key player.

Bridges has expressed surprise at Ampadu’s experience level at just 23. Despite his relatively short career, Ampadu has played in England, Germany, and Italy. He began at Chelsea and has been on loan to Sheffield United, Leipzig, Spezia, and Venezia before joining Leeds.
With 52 caps for Wales and 170 competitive club appearances already to his name, Ampadu’s extensive playing experience stands out. Bridges noted, “When he signed, I knew he was a leader and a great player. I didn’t realize just how many games he had under his belt at such a young age. A captain needs someone who is reliable and experienced, and Ampadu certainly fits that bill.”
“Yes he is. Good in the dressing room? You’ve seen that. He’s got that aura and chrisma. A very good decision. The best thing about him, his performances whether that is defence or midfield,” Bridges said.

Ampadu has demonstrated his leadership not just on the pitch but also in Leeds’ transfer dealings, particularly with the signing of defender Joe Rodon. Ampadu was persistent in encouraging Rodon to join Leeds permanently, and his efforts paid off when Rodon was signed for £10 million from Tottenham, partly facilitated by Archie Gray’s move to the London club.
Ampadu said, “I was on him a lot about coming here. I’m happy that Leeds fans can stop asking me, ‘Is he coming back?’ I got that question quite a bit over the summer. It’s great to see him finally come through the doors.”
