Anthony Edwards joined forces with his childhood idol Kevin Durant this summer at the Olympics, sparking discussions about the possibility of them teaming up in the future.
While much of the speculation has been far-fetched, the idea gains some credibility when presented by former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins. Perkins, who has experience playing on superteams with the Celtics and Heat, brings a knowledgeable perspective to the conversation.
“After this NBA season, we might see some significant changes. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a reunion between Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, or even LeBron James and Steph Curry teaming up. Another possibility is Kevin Durant joining Anthony Edwards in Minnesota, especially after their notable handshake. These kinds of relationships often lead to unexpected moves,” Perkins said Monday on ESPN’s *First Take*.

The idea of Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant teaming up in Minnesota for the start of the 2025-26 season is intriguing, though it remains hypothetical at this stage. Durant, who will be 36 in September, is under contract with the Suns for two more seasons, earning $51 million for the upcoming season and $54.7 million in 2025-26 before hitting free agency in the summer of 2026. For the Timberwolves to acquire Durant before he becomes a free agent, they’d likely need to orchestrate a trade, possibly involving Karl-Anthony Towns and his max contract.

The Timberwolves might indeed be interested in a 37-year-old Durant with one year left on his deal, considering he’s still an elite scorer. Acquiring him could also provide financial flexibility, as letting Durant walk after the 2025-26 season would help mitigate luxury tax concerns associated with Towns’ contract, which runs through 2028 unless he opts out of his $61 million player option for the 2027-28 season.

While it’s speculative, the strong connection between Edwards and Durant could make this scenario more plausible.

Edwards has called Durant his favorite player of all time multiple times. Durant has returned the admiration. “He’s my favorite player to watch… I love everything about Ant,” he said earlier this year.

“When the game is on the line who’s our alpha? I think Kevin Durant, he better be… that’s who I came to see,” Edwards said ahead of the Paris games. “Who I look to for advice? Of course KD, that’s my favorite player of all time, anything I wanna ask I go straight to him.”
