The University of New Mexico Lobos football program is under scrutiny. Head coach Jason Eck faces mounting criticism from fans, alumni, and local media over the team’s lackluster performance and alleged issues within the locker room. Jason Eck, who took over the program in 2019, was initially hailed as a homegrown leader poised to revitalize a struggling team. However, four seasons into his tenure, the Lobos have yet to make significant strides, compiling a disappointing overall record and failing to secure a bowl game appearance. Critics argue that the team’s struggles go beyond the win-loss column, pointing to questions about player development, in-game decision-making, and a lack of offensive identity.

Adding to the controversy, recent reports have emerged alleging dissatisfaction among players regarding Gonzales’ leadership style. Anonymous sources within the program have claimed that his approach is overly authoritarian, stifling player morale and creating a tense environment. One former player reportedly stated, “Coach Jason Eck preaches accountability, but it feels like the blame is always on us and never on the coaching staff. It’s hard to play for someone who doesn’t own up to their own mistakes.”

The situation has also caught the attention of Lobos alumni, many of whom are vocal about their concerns on social media and local sports radio. Some have even called for a change in leadership, arguing that the program needs a fresh perspective to compete in the Mountain West Conference.

In a press conference addressing the criticism, Eck defended his coaching methods, stating, “Rebuilding a program takes time and patience. I believe in what we’re doing here and the direction we’re heading. I’m committed to these players and to making New Mexico football a source of pride for this community.”

Despite his assurances, the backlash has put pressure on the university’s athletic department to act. Athletic director Eddie Nuñez has publicly expressed support for Eck but also hinted at the need for measurable improvement. “We understand the frustration of our fans and alumni,” Nuñez said. “We believe in Coach Jason Eck’ vision, but we also know results matter.”

With the Lobos’ upcoming schedule featuring several challenging opponents, the spotlight on Jason Eck and his staff is only expected to intensify. The program’s trajectory in the coming weeks could determine not only the team’s future but also the fate of its embattled head coach.
