According to reports by On3’s Hayes Fawcett, the Ohio State Buckeyes have initiated contact with Jacoby Mathews, a safety transfer from Texas A&M who entered the portal earlier this offseason. Mathews, a former four-star recruit from the 2022 class hailing from Ponchatoula, Louisiana, finds himself seeking a new team following the departure of head coach Jimbo Fisher, who initially recruited him to the Aggies.

If Jacoby Mathews decides to commit to Ohio State, he would become the seventh transfer addition for coach Ryan Day and his coaching staff. The Buckeyes have already secured commitments from notable talents such as Alabama safety Caleb Downs, Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins, Alabama quarterback Julian Sayin, Alabama offensive lineman Seth McLaughlin, Kansas State quarterback Will Howard, and Ohio tight end Will Kacmarek.

However, Mathews still has numerous options to consider, as several elite programs like Michigan, Penn State, Oregon, Florida State, and Washington are also vying for his services in the recruiting competition.

While the Buckeyes have already bolstered their safety position with the high-profile addition of Caleb Downs, Jacoby Mathews offers a compelling skill set of his own. During his two seasons at Texas A&M, Mathews showcased his abilities by accumulating 67 total tackles, half a sack, seven passes defended, and one interception.
