For the fourth consecutive week, the Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for Justin Fields to start at quarterback, and they are aiming for a similar outcome to their first three games of the season, all of which resulted in victories.

With veteran Russell Wilson waiting in the wings, Fields is determined to hold onto the starting spot. It’s hard to bench an undefeated quarterback, even if they began the season as a backup on paper.

A 4-0 record would be hard to ignore, and Fields seems particularly motivated to maintain the winning streak, as evidenced by his latest Instagram post leading into Week 4.

Justin Fields’ recent Instagram post, “Not finished but enjoying the moment… 3-0,” reflects his confidence and determination as the Pittsburgh Steelers aim to extend their undefeated run. Fields is making a strong case to retain the starting quarterback role, especially as the team rides the momentum of their 3-0 start.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also praised Fields’ performance during a media session on September 24. When asked about how Fields’ strong play impacts their handling of Russell Wilson’s calf injury, Tomlin acknowledged the young quarterback’s contributions. “No question Justin has played well, and that’s exciting for him and for us,” Tomlin said. He highlighted that the team is not yet ready to make any long-term decisions about the quarterback situation but emphasized how Fields’ consistency has been key.

Tomlin commended Fields’ steady demeanor, stating that his calm and composed approach is something teammates can rally around. “He doesn’t ride the emotional roller coaster,” Tomlin said, noting how valuable that is in a leader. He also lauded Fields’ competitive nature, adding, “[He] likes to compete. He doesn’t turn down things. [And] he’s aggressive in play — scrambling and so forth.”

Tomlin’s final thoughts summarized how much the Steelers have enjoyed watching Fields grow, both as a player and a competitor, as the team continues its strong start to the season.

Justin Fields is quickly earning the respect of his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates, not just for his play on the field but for his leadership in the locker room. According to a report by Yardbarker’s Aaron Becker, Steelers players appreciate Fields’ calm demeanor and leadership style, even though he isn’t always the most vocal presence.

Tight end Darnell Washington described Fields as a laid-back player whose cool personality off the field translates into his on-field leadership. “He’s just one of those calm dudes, personality wise. So that just carried over to the field,” Washington said.

Wide receiver George Pickens also praised Fields, noting his steady performance and how his leadership comes more from his actions rather than words. “He don’t really say as much, so I wouldn’t say vocal leadership. Probably him every day going out [there] in practice, is probably what Darnell is talking about,” Pickens explained.

Rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson echoed his teammates, describing Fields as someone who steps up vocally when necessary and is admired by his peers. “He’s a quiet guy but he’s vocal when he needs to be. He’s a great leader, great player. Just someone that people love to play for,” Wilson said, adding that Fields possesses the “it” factor that players love in a quarterback.

With the Steelers riding a 3-0 start, it’s clear that Fields’ leadership and consistent play have rallied the locker room behind him. If he can maintain this form, Fields and the Steelers could be poised for a strong run in the 2024 season.
