The Detroit Red Wings announced Monday morning that blue-chip Swedish prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka has signed his entry-level contract:

Axel Sandin-Pellikka, who celebrated his 19th birthday in March, was selected 17th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. Since then, the agile defenseman has showcased his skills with several impressive performances. He has excelled in the SHL, representing SkellefteƄ AIK, and has also represented Team Sweden in the World Junior Championships and International Juniors. Sandin-Pellikka played a crucial role in helping SkellefteƄ AIK secure the league championship, contributing 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists) in 14 games.
“To me, he’s someone who has the potential to develop into a first-unit, power play quarterback sort of defenseman. One of the 10-15 guys who can run a power play from the blue line. The question with him is always going to be his defense.” – Eastern Conference executive, May 2023
ASP still has some growing to do before he becomes a full-time NHL player. Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman recently stated that he anticipates Sandin-Pellikka will continue his development in Sweden for at least another year.
