The Impact of Iowa Running Back Kaleb Johnson Opting Out of the Music City Bowl

Replacing a running back like Kaleb Johnson, who contributed 61% of Iowa’s touchdowns, 43% of their total yardage, and 43% of their total touches this season, is no easy feat. This is the challenge the Hawkeyes face on Monday after Johnson’s decision to sit out against the Missouri Tigers.

Initially expected to share carries this season, Johnson took full advantage of his opportunity when Leshon Williams was sidelined by injury before Iowa’s opener. Johnson went on to rack up 1,537 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns, setting a new program record for rushing touchdowns in a single season.

Following an impressive junior season, Kaleb Johnson announced on social media that he would skip the Music City Bowl to focus on preparing for the NFL Draft, aiming to leverage his rising draft stock.

In Johnson’s absence, Iowa is expected to rely on freshman running back Kamari Moulton, who has logged 70 carries for 377 yards this season. This game offers the Hawkeyes a chance to assess Moulton’s potential as a key future contributor at running back.

Moulton brings greater speed than Johnson but lacks his physical running style, which may create challenges in short-yardage situations against Missouri’s stout defensive front. In those instances, Jaz Patterson is likely to take over as a power back, giving Iowa a more physical option on Monday.

Johnson’s absence is a significant blow to the Hawkeyes’ ability to generate offense through their running game, forcing adjustments to their offensive strategy. Quarterback Brendan Sullivan, a versatile dual-threat player, could become a crucial part of the rushing attack. His mobility may prove pivotal in keeping Missouri’s defense on its heels.

Iowa’s offense will have a different dynamic on Monday, with their approach to moving the ball still uncertain. The matchup is shaping up to be a gritty battle in the trenches between Missouri’s defensive line and Iowa’s offensive front, where much of the game’s outcome may be decided.
