Then again, it might not be

The selection of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy by the Minnesota Vikings with the 10th pick in the recent NFL Draft drew attention to his winning track record. McCarthy enjoyed remarkable success in high school and compiled a 27-1 record as the starting quarterback at Michigan during his two years in that role. While the debate over whether wins are a quarterback stat continues, an interesting phenomenon has unfolded for Minnesota sports teams since McCarthy’s draft selection.

As noted by Fantasy Pros writer and fellow Vikings fan Thor Nystrom on social media, no Minnesota sports team has suffered a loss since the Vikings drafted McCarthy last Thursday.

Since McCarthy’s selection last Thursday, the Minnesota sports scene has experienced a remarkable streak of victories. The Minnesota Twins have won nine consecutive games, contributing to an impressive 12-game winning streak. In the NBA playoffs, the Minnesota Timberwolves, following a loss in their final regular-season game before the draft, have secured five consecutive victories, including a historic four-game sweep of the Phoenix Suns in Round 1. Even the local soccer team, Minnesota United FC, has notched a pair of wins since McCarthy’s selection.

The streak of victories for Minnesota sports teams, going 16-0 since the Vikings added quarterback J.J. McCarthy a little over a week ago, is certainly intriguing. While correlation doesn’t necessarily imply causation, it’s hard not to wonder if there’s a connection, even if just for fun.

(And of course, if the Twins happen to lose to Boston today, we’ll just chalk it up to coincidence.)
