According to the transaction log, the Pirates have traded minor league outfielder Gilberto Celestino to the Chicago Cubs. Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the return for the Pirates is cash considerations from the Cubs.

Celestino, 25, has MLB experience from two seasons with the Minnesota Twins. In 145 games between 2021 and 2022, he posted a .222/.292/.300 line with 4 home runs. He did not play in the Majors in 2023 and became a free agent at the end of the year.

The Pirates signed Celestino to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to spring training, but he did not make the team and has not appeared in the Majors this season. He was batting .271/.348/.356 with 3 home runs in 67 games for Triple-A Indianapolis.

In return, the Pirates are receiving cash considerations from the Cubs. Typically, cash considerations in such deals do not exceed $100,000, although it’s not uncommon for a player to be traded for as little as one dollar.

This story will be updated with the specific cash amount if and when it becomes available.
