The New York Yankees could be without their first baseman for the next six weeks.

Anthony Rizzo fractured his arm on Sunday during New York’s 9-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Monday. While the injury won’t require surgery, it could sideline Rizzo for four to six weeks.

The injury occurred in the top of the seventh inning when Rizzo collided with relief pitcher Brennan Bernardino while running down the first base line. Rizzo remained on the ground in visible pain before walking off with a trainer. He did not return to the game.

It’s uncertain how the Yankees will manage Rizzo’s absence, but according to Rosenthal, there’s a possibility that third baseman DJ LeMahieu could see increased playing time at first base. Additionally, Oswaldo Cabrera might step in to cover third base during this period.

Rizzo had been batting .233 with eight home runs, 28 RBIs, and a .341 slugging percentage in 70 games this season for the first-place Yankees.

After losing two out of three games to the Red Sox at Fenway Park over the weekend, the Yankees are now gearing up for a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles starting on Tuesday. Baltimore is currently just 1.5 games behind New York in the standings.
