Following their impressive 4-0 win over Manchester City in the Premier League, there was optimism that Spurs could build on that success and claim another three points against Fulham on Sunday. However, their hopes were dampened even before kickoff, as Dominic Solanke fell ill upon arrival at the stadium and was sent home.
During the match, Spurs struggled to find their rhythm. As the game progressed, their limited bench options prevented them from turning things around, even after Fulham were reduced to 10 men.
Ange Postecoglou believes the challenges facing the team are not being fully understood.
Following the match, he was asked about the home crowd’s boos at full-time and whether they related to his earlier comments about people not grasping what the team is going through. Speaking to Football.London, Postecoglou responded, “Oh, I didn’t hear that. If that’s the case, no, I’m not referring to the supporters. I’m just pointing out that I’ve already been asked multiple times about the Manchester City game and why we can’t replicate that performance.
“I think it’s clear that in the last seven days, we’ve taken a couple of significant hits. It’s not as simple as saying, ‘Let’s just play like we did against Man City every game.’ It feels like, with this club, any success we achieve is quickly turned into a burden used to criticize us at the next opportunity.”
“And from my perspective, it’s crucial that we don’t get caught up in all that noise and stay focused,” Postecoglou continued. “I feel strongly that the players we have right now are putting in an incredible effort for this club, working hard to push us toward where we want to be.
“We’re in a good place overall. We’re in a solid position in the league, still competing in the Carabao Cup, and well-placed in Europe. The key for us is to stay focused and keep building on our progress.”
Fan anxiety stems from Tottenham’s inconsistency.
Postecoglou’s perspective is understandable, given the significant blows to his squad’s attacking depth. Despite this, Spurs remain in 7th place in the Premier League, 9th in the Europa League, and have reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. They are well-positioned to surpass last season’s achievements.
However, the team’s unpredictable performances are fostering unease among supporters. While Postecoglou wisely focuses on the bigger picture, it’s harder for fans to appreciate progress when immediate results falter.
A strong showing against Chelsea, Rangers, and Manchester United would go a long way in calming these concerns. Yet, with a demanding schedule ahead, achieving consistent performances might be a longer-term goal rather than something resolved in December alone.
