The Steelers are reportedly set to Add Arthur Smith’s former star player

Pittsburgh Steelers might have another quarterback option.

The Pittsburgh Steelers hired Arthur Smith, the former Atlanta Falcons head coach, as their offensive coordinator. Now, their focus is on building the right roster for their offense to succeed, and those making the decisions have not been shy about finding a quarterback.

At the end of the season, head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Kenny Pickett would “resume” his QB1 status, but there would be competition. The team hopes Mason Rudolph will compete, but he is not guaranteed to re-sign with the team this offseason.

Steelers president Art Rooney II backed up the statement, saying the “next step” is for the team to have good quarterback play.

What if they hired a veteran who has had previous success with Smith as an offensive coordinator? While working with Smith in Tennessee, he helped lead the Titans to the AFC Championship game, earned his first Pro Bowl, and was named Comeback Player of the Year.

Ryan Tannehill, a 35-year-old veteran who was benched by the Titans this season, is set to hit the open market. According to Spotrac, his estimated market value for one year is $4.9 million, and he’s most likely just looking for the right fit.

Pittsburgh may be the right fit. They are looking for competition but may not be looking for a veteran franchise quarterback, and he now has the opportunity to reunite with the offensive coordinator who helped him have his best season.

The Steelers acquire a player with extensive starting experience and NFL success. If they need a bridge quarterback, he’s the best option as he nears the end of his career. Furthermore, he will not be expensive to bring in for “competition.”

Rudolph remains their top option, but if he leaves in free agency, the backup plan may shift to a familiar face who can make an easier transition into an offensive playbook he already knows.
